Hormone therapy

In order to increase your chances of successful fertility treatment, hormone therapy is always used in conjunction with IVF / ICSI treatment, and, in most cases, also in connection with insemination.

Hormone therapy promotes follicular growth, so that several eggs mature concurrently in the ovaries. Hormone therapy is administered as an injection once a day for the number of days you agree with your fertility doctor. You can administer the injection yourself at home without problems. Our nurse will show you how to do it. After approximately seven treatment days, the size and number of the eggs are checked with an ultrasound scan, and the hormone dose is adjusted if needed.

When there are three follicles with a diameter > 17 mm, the egg retrieval is scheduled. Sometimes there is a need for an additional ultrasound scan a few days later before the egg retrieval can be scheduled.

Ovulation syringe

Once the eggs are ready, you must have an injection with an ovulation hormone which completes the maturation of the eggs. The injection is very important and must be administered at home at a very fixed time by agreement with us.

If you accidentally forget to administer the ovulation syringe injection, no eggs can be retrieved and this cycle must be cancelled.

Egg retrieval

The mature eggs can be retrieved from the ovaries approximately 36 hours after ovulation.  The egg retrieval itself only takes about 10-15 minutes, and you will be given an analgesic during the procedure, so that you will not experience discomfort.

The egg retrieval is done through the vagina with ultrasound guidance. The fertility doctor gently inserts a thin needle through the top of the vagina and into the follicles. These are clustered like a bunch of grapes, and it is therefore most often only necessary to prick once or twice on each side. You are awake and can follow the procedure on the ultrasound screen, but you will probably feel a little drowsy/dizzy from the analgesic you have been given.

After the egg retrieval, you must rest in the fertility clinic for at least half an hour. When you feel ready, you can go home. You will probably feel tired and need to rest for the remainder of the day. You may have some menstrual-like pain, and a little bleeding is also normal.

Fertilisation of the eggs

The retrieved eggs are fertilised on the same day in our laboratories using either the IVF or ICSI method. For this purpose, we need a fresh sperm sample from your partner or a sperm donor. We closely monitor this process in the laboratory and place the fertilised eggs in a special heating cabinet in which they develop further. At Aleris-Hamlet Fertility, we use the new EmbryoScope+ technique for cultivation of the fertilised eggs, as this gives an optimal cultivation environment for your eggs, thus improving your chances of getting pregnant.

Egg transfer

If the fertilisation is successful and there is a suitable egg for transfer to your uterus, we will schedule a date for the egg transfer with you. An egg transfer to the uterus is normally a pain-free procedure lasting only a few minutes. We usually only transfer one egg. This is done in the same way as a ordinary gynaecological examination, in which the doctor inserts a thin catheter through the cervical canal and places the egg surrounded by a bit of fluid in the uterus.

If there are excess suitable fertilised eggs, they may be frozen for later use.
